Analyst to Sony: Change or Lose

“DFC Intelligence believes Sony’s PS3 business model is “handing its competitors a golden opportunity” to take the console crown. Late last month, San Diego-based DFC Intelligence raised more than a few eyebrows when it said that Sony could very well end up last in the next-gen gaming race, behind competitors Microsoft and Nintendo. Today, the research firm released an industry briefing, and its song remains largely the same. DFC begins by saying that Sony is currently the “king of the video game market,” but with the PlayStation 3, it is clear that Sony is “handing its competitors a golden opportunity.” The firm believes that the premium PS3’s $600 price tag will put off potential consumers, hurting the overall gaming market and possibly putting Sony dead last in terms of installed user base.” (Read full article here)

Apple iTunes Movie Rentals Is The Word

“The word is out and about that Apple is getting set to announce an iTunes movie rentals store. According to rumour site Think Secret, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will use his keynote address of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on August 7 to announce the movie rentals debut on iTunes. Apple is said to have forged agreements with four major studios and is in talks with the others. Studios on board so far include Walt Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros…” (Read full article here)

G8 Pledges Crack-down on Piracy and Counterfeiting

“Each G8 nation has agreed to examine the problem of international differences on intellectual property rights (IPR) and its enforcement. As part of a commitment to strengthen and enforce IPR, each nation has made a commitment to take a tougher stance on piracy, counterfeiting and other forms of IPR crime. Scientists Concoct Chocolate That Won’t Melt

“Chocolate is not widely consumed in the tropics, even though that’s where most of the world’s cocoa is produced. The reason: It’s too hot. High temperatures in countries like Nigeria reduce chocolate into a sticky, gooey mess. Food scientists have been trying to remedy this situation for decades, and now researchers in Nigeria believe they are close to achieving the holy grail among chocolate manufacturers: a heat-resistant chocolate that actually tastes like chocolate.” (Read full article here)

L.A. News Service Sues YouTube Over Beating Video

“A Los Angeles video news service sued YouTube Inc. on Friday in federal court for allowing its users to upload copyrighted video footage onto the popular Web site, including the beating of trucker Reginald Denny during the 1992 riots. Los Angeles News Service and its owner and operator, Robert Tur, assert in the lawsuit that in one week’s time, one version of the Denny beating uploaded by a YouTube user was viewed and downloaded 1,000 times via the site…” (Read full article here)

AMD Mobile Price Cuts, New CPUs

“AMD is expected to announce price cuts on October 23rd, 2006 for its complete mobile processor lineup. The price cuts affect Turion 64 X2 dual-core Socket S1 and Sempron Socket S1 and 754 mobile products.
