“With global music sales down for a seventh straight year, the talk at an annual industry meeting in Cannes, France, has become heated over how to develop digital sales against competition from the dreaded F word - free. Global sales are expected to be down again for 2006 despite digital sales almost doubling to $2 billion and the popularity of music being as strong as ever. Critics of the major players in the industry argue that they have been distracted by the fight against piracy and in doing so, hindered the growth of the legal business. “Investors gave their blessing to eBay’s turnaround Wednesday, sending the stock of the San Jose auctioneer soaring after it trounced Wall Street’s expectations for the second quarter in a row. EBay’s fourth-quarter net income rose 24 percent to $346 million, or 25 cents a share. Excluding stock-based compensation and other expenses, eBay said net income increased 27 percent to $431 million, or 31 cents a share, three cents above Wall Street estimates…” (Read full article here)

There is an extremely interesting interview with the man who conquered the DRM that the backers of Blu-ray and HD DVD were touting as nearly impenetrable. It covers how the media portrays him, his motivation for working against the protection, and his goals for bringing his methods to the mainstream. One is external and USB, the other internal and (three cheers!) serial ATA.
