Europe cell phone study focuses on tumors

“A European study suggests people using cell phones for 10 or more years have a higher risk of developing brain tumors than do non-cell phone users. The five-nation study involving more than 4,500 people found a statistically significant increase in the incidence of tumors on the side of the head where the users hold their cell phones, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported…” (Read full article here)

DRM blamed for music’s seven-year slump

“With global music sales down for a seventh straight year, the talk at an annual industry meeting in Cannes, France, has become heated over how to develop digital sales against competition from the dreaded F word - free. Global sales are expected to be down again for 2006 despite digital sales almost doubling to $2 billion and the popularity of music being as strong as ever. Critics of the major players in the industry argue that they have been distracted by the fight against piracy and in doing so, hindered the growth of the legal business. In response, the accused argue that they had little choice…” (Read full article here)

“Investors gave their blessing to eBay’s turnaround Wednesday, sending the stock of the San Jose auctioneer soaring after it trounced Wall Street’s expectations for the second quarter in a row. Interview with muslix64, Blu-ray / HD DVD DRM defeater

There is an extremely interesting interview with the man who conquered the DRM that the backers of Blu-ray and HD DVD were touting as nearly impenetrable. It covers how the media portrays him, his motivation for working against the protection, and his goals for bringing his methods to the mainstream. There’s a lot more, and definitely worth the read, whether you are for or against the anti-DRM crowd. (Read the full interview here)

Shops gearing up for Vista retail launch

“Retailers are gearing up for next week’s Vista launch but it appears the “midnight madness” will be kept to a minimum. That’s a far cry from the epic August 1995 launch of Windows 95, when Microsoft managed to get people to line up for blocks to buy its latest release. But that doesn’t mean retailers aren’t counting on Vista. While the new operating system didn’t arrive in time for last year’s holiday shopping season, retailers are hoping something special in January might draw buyers at a time that is not…” (Read full article here)

Intel launches next-gen Wireless-N

“Intel introduced the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N network connection, an upgrade to the wireless component found inside Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and other Intel-based laptops that helps consumers better connect to wireless networks. As notebook PCs increasingly download broadband-intense content such as movies, videos and music, a more powerful networking solution is needed. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N technology addresses that need by offering users up to five times(b) the performance and twice the wireless range – while providing up to an extra hour of notebook battery life when compared to existing Draft-N products…” (Read full article here)

Blu-ray encryption defeated

“The hacker who cracked HD DVD strikes again by defeating Blu-ray Disc encryption. Late last year, a crafty individual who goes by the name “Muslix64” circumvented the copy protection scheme used to protect HD DVD. Given the similarities between the copy protection methods used in the high-definition optical formats, it was only a matter of time before Blu-ray Disc’s protections would be bypassed…” (Read full article here)
