U.S. group wants Canada blacklisted over piracy

“A powerful coalition of U.S. software, movie and music producers is urging the Bush administration to put Canada on an infamous blacklist of intellectual property villains, alongside China, Russia and Belize. Canada’s chronic failure to modernize its copyright regime has made it a global hub for bootleg movies, pirated software and tiny microchips that allow video-game users to bypass copyright protections, the International Intellectual Property Alliance complains in a submission to the U.S. government. The time has come for the United States to send a stern warning to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, which has failed to deliver on a promised overhaul of copyright laws and a policing crackdown, said the Washington-based group that represents companies such as Microsoft, Apple and Paramount Pictures…” (Read full article here)

Hackers discover HD DVD and Blu-ray “processing key” - all HD titles now exposed

“Those cooky kids over at the Doom9 forums hate themselves some DRM. Not more than two months after discovering a means to extract the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc “volume keys” to decrypt AACS DRM on individual films, we’re now getting word that DRM hacker arnezami has found the “processing key” used to decrypt the DRM on all HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc films. Let’s break this down for what it is: instead of needing individual keys for each and every high-definition film — of which there are many — the processing key can be used to unlock, decrypt, and backup every HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc film released so far…” (Read full article here)

Leaked letter shows RIAA pressuring ISPs, planning discounts for early settlements

“The RIAA is asking for additional cooperation from ISPs in getting customers targeted by the RIAA’s file-sharing sting to cooperate, according to a letter recently leaked to P2P attorney Ray Beckerman. In it, the RIAA lays out its vision for how it would like ISPs to cooperate with its efforts to identify and sue those accused of sharing music over P2P networks. The Pirate Bay introduces Oscartorrents

In an outrageous move, PirateBay has launched a new Torrents site - OscarTorrents. Tagged as ‘The Future of Oscars, Today’, it offers all the nominated films for download via Torrent. The site is also offering an unofficial Oscar vote - download the films, vote for your own winners, and OscarTorrents will publish the public’s list of winners alongside the official jury vote. Rather than linking all the torrents back to PirateBay, the download links point to a number of sites, including BTJunkie and IsoHunt. Presumably to spread the love? Check out the site here.

Zune phone confirmed, could launch before iPhone

“Last week, Engadget reported that sources close to Microsoft had passed along information about a Zune-based competitor to Apple’s iPhone. Following up on those reports, CrunchGear goes on to say today that the Zune phone is not just a rumor and is confirmed for a 2007 release. Now this is really interesting. It’s pretty safe to say that the Zune has done little to challenge the iPod in the portable music market. So, what potential reason would Microsoft have to believe that a telephone bearing the Zune brand would fare any different in competing against the iPhone?…” (Read full article here)
