“The OpenOffice.org Community on March 29 announced the release of a major upgrade to OpenOffice: version 2.2. The group claims that with upgrades to its word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software, the free office suite provides a real alternative to Microsoft’s recently-released Office 2007 product. Current users of older versions of Microsoft Office will find OpenOffice 2.2 to be an easier upgrade path than Office 2007, the group suggests. Overall, version 2.2 should appear better to users thanks to its support for kerning, a technique that improves the appearance of text written in proportional fonts; kerning is now enabled by default…” (Read full article here)

“Revenue continued its steady increase for Linux seller Red Hat’s most recent quarter, but net income dropped 25 percent. For the final quarter of its fiscal 2007, which ended February 28, Red Hat reported revenue growth of 41 percent to $111.1 million. But the company’s net income declined to $20.5 million, or 10 cents per share, from $27.3 million, or 13 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. Red Hat’s net income was pushed down by operating expenses that increased from $45.6 million a year earlier to $77.1 million. Part of those expenses stemmed from the company’s acquisition last June of JBoss, a seller of open-source Java server software…” (Read full article here)

“The thousand gigabyte-per-disk era is almost upon us. Earlier this year Seagate confirmed it would ship a 1TB hard drive before the second half of this year. With the first quarter of this year already over, the launch window for Seagate’s next generation drive is rapidly shrinking. Seagate would not confirm or deny the expectation of a new 7200.11 series this morning. Seagate representatives responded to our inquiries stating, “We already stated earlier this year that we would have the 1TB drive before the second half of this year…” (Read full article here)

“The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has rejected a controversial proposal to create a new .xxx domain suffix for adult Web sites. ICANN on Friday voted 9-5 to deny an application from ICM Registry, which for the past several years has sought to be the registry for adult-content Web sites. ICANN, which oversees domain names and Internet addresses, decided that ICM’s proposal raised too many public-policy concerns and ultimately could change the role of the nonprofit organization…” (Read full article here)

“Photobucket has 38 million members, but unless you use MySpace or Facebook, you might not know them. Fortune’s David Kirkpatrick provides a snapshot of the Web’s hottest photo site. Photobucket is the most important site on the Internet that hardly anybody understands. Unpretentiously, it has built an essential service that didn’t need to shout out for attention, the way MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, or other related sites have. Yet it’s built an audience of 38 million members, a figure now growing more than 80,000 per day. That’s up from just 50,000 members at the end of 2003…” (Read full article here)

However, new-generation modchips capable of working with the revised Wii consoles may become available in less than a month, according to retail channels in Taiwan. The new Wiis, which are part of new shipments of the console, have an altered circuit layout that makes modification more difficult than in earlier versions. Users attempting to mod the new consoles using current modchips are very likely to damage the system, the sources pointed out…” (Read full article here)
