Red Hat revenue up, profit down

“Revenue continued its steady increase for Linux seller Red Hat’s most recent quarter, but net income dropped 25 percent. For the final quarter of its fiscal 2007, which ended February 28, Red Hat reported revenue growth of 41 percent to $111.1 million. But the company’s net income declined to $20.5 million, or 10 cents per share, from $27.3 million, or 13 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. Red Hat’s net income was pushed down by operating expenses that increased from $45.6 million a year earlier to $77.1 million. Part of those expenses stemmed from the company’s acquisition last June of JBoss, a seller of open-source Java server software…” (Read full article here)

Seagate prepping 1TB Barracuda hard drive

“The thousand gigabyte-per-disk era is almost upon us. Earlier this year Seagate confirmed it would ship a 1TB hard drive before the second half of this year. With the first quarter of this year already over, the launch window for Seagate’s next generation drive is rapidly shrinking. Seagate would not confirm or deny the expectation of a new 7200.11 series this morning. Seagate representatives responded to our inquiries stating, “We already stated earlier this year that we would have the 1TB drive before the second half of this year…” (Read full article here)

Hewlett-Packard sues Acer over PC patents

“HP announces litigation against Taiwan computer maker Acer for patent infringement. Hewlett-Packard is taking Acer to court over Acer’s alleged infringement of five HP patents. The lawsuit was filed today in a court located in the Eastern District of Texas. More specifically, HP believes Acer infringed on patents ranging from DVD editing, power management, processing capabilities, clock switching, and other technologies from 1997 to 2003. HP wants both unspecified damages and an injunction forcing Acer to immediately stop selling some products on the U.S. market…” (Read full article here)

LG Electronics and Google team up

ICANN rejects .xxx domain registry

“The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has rejected a controversial proposal to create a new .xxx domain suffix for adult Web sites. ICANN on Friday voted 9-5 to deny an application from ICM Registry, which for the past several years has sought to be the registry for adult-content Web sites. ICANN, which oversees domain names and Internet addresses, decided that ICM’s proposal raised too many public-policy concerns and ultimately could change the role of the nonprofit organization…” (Read full article here)
