“At the IEEE Semi-Therm Conference 2007, IBM researchers unveiled details of a new technique to significantly improve capabilities to cool computer chips. The technique, developed by a team of scientists at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in cooperation with Momentive Performance Materials, formerly GE Advanced Materials, overcomes a barrier in chip cooling by improving the application of the “glue” that binds chips to their cooling systems. The new technology could allow faster computer chips to be cooled more efficiently…” (Read full article here)

“Microsoft said it sold 20 million licenses of the Windows Vista operating system in its first month of wide availability, topping some analysts’ estimates. The sales pace is more than double that of the previous Windows XP program, which sold more than 17 million copies in its first two months, said Bill Mannion, a director of Windows product management. Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, had anticipated Microsoft would sell fewer than 10 million copies for the entire first quarter…” (Read full article here)

“Apple’s recently released Apple TV has been hacked and given the ability to play XviD movies alongside the stock .mov and H.264 format. This is a well received surprise for early adopters of the unit, it may take some work, but if XviD is what you like, it’s worth every second. One reason why many people are holding back on the Apple TV is its non-existent ability to play XviD out of the box. Now, for those who have been wanting this feature it is possible, but will take a little work…” (Read full article here)

“It’s not like he needs it to beef up his résumé, but the world’s richest college dropout finally is getting his degree. Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, will speak at Harvard University’s commencement ceremony in June and, like all commencement speakers, will receive an honorary degree from the institution. It’s hard to guess if Gates, the wealthiest person in the world and co-founder of a company that brought in $44 billion in revenue last year, cares. But the programming whiz who once dropped out of Harvard will likely feel some sense of satisfaction…” (Read full article here)

“In a dramatic acceleration of the seven-year sales decline that has battered the music industry, compact-disc sales for the first three months of this year plunged 20% from a year earlier, the latest sign of the seismic shift in the way consumers acquire music. The sharp slide in sales of CDs, which still account for more than 85% of music sold, has far eclipsed the growth in sales of digital downloads, which were supposed to have been the industry’s salvation…” (Read full article here)

“A U.S. District Court Judge has denied the RIAA’s effort to walk away quietly from its case against New York resident Patricia Santangelo, saying she had the right to have her legal status resolved “one way or the other.” In a judgment filed on Monday and obtained by BetaNews, Judge Colleen McMahon ruled that RIAA will either have to proceed to trial or motion to dismiss the case with prejudice. Either way will result in an unfavorable situation for the group…” (Read full article here)
