“As many as 1500 Pentagon computers were brought offline on Wednesday in response to a cyber attack. Defense Secretary Robert Gates reported of the fallout both that the attack had ‘no adverse impact on department operations’ and that ‘there will be some administrative disruptions and personal inconveniences.’ When asked whether his own e-mail had been compromised, Gates responded, ‘I don’t do e-mail. “Last week, a press release was issued by Ellacotya that suggested something quite startling - HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, aka Web traffic) had for the first time in four years overtaken P2P traffic. The results were surprising, as BitTorrent alone has dominated the Internet with some estimates suggesting it can consume up to 60% of an ISP’s traffic. “Microsoft security executive Jeff Jones has disclosed that in the first six months of Vista’s release, the company has patched fewer than half of the operating system’s known bugs. Microsoft has fixed only 12 of 27 reported Vista vulnerabilities whereas it patched 36 of 39 known bugs in Windows XP in the first six months following its release. Jones says that’s because “Windows Vista continues to show a trend of fewer total and fewer high-severity vulnerabilities at the six month mark compared to … Windows XP,” but he did not address the 15 unpatched flaws…” (Read full article here)

“After reading an article in the Miami Herald that said “[President] Bush’s twin daughters gave him a CD they had made for him to listen to while exercising,” a Florida lawyer calculated statutory damages of $1.8 million and has sent a letter to the RIAA asking that they ‘display the same vigor in prosecuting this matter and protecting the rights of your rights-holders that it has displayed in enforcing those rights against other alleged violators.’ From the letter: ‘This is a serious violation of copyright. As you know, whichever of your member organizations that are right[s]-holders for the copied musical works may be entitled to statutory damages of $150,000.00 per musical work copied…’” (Read full article here)
