“Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s Wii game console outsold Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of over 6 to 1 in June in Japan, a game magazine publisher said, solidifying Nintendo’s leading position. Nintendo sold 270,974 units of the Wii in the four weeks ended June 24, compared with 41,628 units for the PS3 and 17,616 units for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360, according to data from Enterbrain. “New complaints claim out-of-country repair centres are now being used due to unprecedented demand. Microsoft’s UK repair centre in Havant is now redistributing faulty consoles to foreign repair centres in order to clear an overwhelming backlog and keep up with the 1,500 to 2,500 Xbox 360s arriving at its doors on a daily basis, according to customer reports. According to Lee Sherman (Gamertag, Toxic Daywalker), who sent us details of his horrible experience, his Xbox 360 had been sent to Prague for repair, which has extended the repair time considerably…” (Read full article here)

“AMD has released Catalyst 7.6 hot on the heels of Catalyst 7.5. The team headed by Terry “Catalyst” Makedon, delivered the June version right on time, after gruelling work to get the WHQL certification on time for release during June. Getting WHQL certification is a long process. “The video gaming industry is poised to overtake the music industry in the US, with global spending on video games surpassing music spending as soon as this year, according to consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. “Both [Nintendo and Sony] forbid licensed third-party publishers from releasing games rated AO for Adults Only on their various hardware platforms. Though Manhunt 2 isn’t slated for any of Microsoft’s systems, the company has also confirmed that it does not allow AO-rated titles on the Xbox or Xbox 360. The sole exception to this rule was in 2005 when the already released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was retroactively rated AO, at which point retailers pulled it from shelves and Take-Two suspended production of the game…” (Read full article here)

“US computer and printer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard has unveiled plans it hopes will make it a major force in the global video and online gaming market. HP bought specialist gaming computer firm VoodooPC at the end of last year, and said it would now expand the hardware the firm was able to offer. Ideas on the drawing board are a curved computer screen and a handheld device that let users play on the move. “A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the price of the PSP has been cut in the US. Until this week, the Core PSP pack retailed for USD 199.99 (EUR 150 / GBP 100). However, it will now carry a price tag of USD 169.99 (EUR 130 / GBP 85). The Core pack includes a PSP, battery and adaptor, and retails for GBP 150 in the UK. When asked if Sony has any plans to cut the price in Europe the spokesperson replied, “We have no announcements to make about the PSP in the European market at this time…” (Read full article here)

“Microsoft has unveiled a new model Xbox 360, dubbed Xbox 360 Elite and due to go on sale April 29 in the US. The new model comes in a black finish, as will the controller and other peripherals, and features a new 120GB hard-drive, as well as a HDMI port and bundled HDMI cable. The console will retail in North America for USD 479 (EUR 358 / GBP 243), with the hard-drive available at a stand alone price of USD 179 (EUR 134 / GBP 91). “Nintendo has altered the circuit layout of its Wii games console in order to block the increasing use of modification chips (modchips). However, new-generation modchips capable of working with the revised Wii consoles may become available in less than a month, according to retail channels in Taiwan. The new Wiis, which are part of new shipments of the console, have an altered circuit layout that makes modification more difficult than in earlier versions. “Console nuts who queued up to buy a new Sony Playstation 3 when it was finally launched in London just after midnight this morning were rewarded with a free 46-inch telly and a taxi ride home. You’d certainly have trouble getting on the bus with such a monstrosity. Over a hundred gamers received the tellies, according to reports. Microsoft is investigating possible fraud taking place on the Xbox live service, after many customers have complained that their accounts have been stolen. “Microsoft continued to build on the success of its Xbox platform by extending it’s popular Live gaming platform to Windows PCs. The service would debut on May 8, and would connect gamers on both platforms together. “Shadowrun” will be the first PC and Xbox 360 title to allow gamers on either platform to play one another in a single environment starting in June, although the Vista version of “Halo 2″ due May 8 will permit person-to-person matches across either platform…” (Read full article here)
