Sony reveals PlayStation Home

“Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has shown off a first-of-its-kind 3D online user community service for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. The service, known as “Home,” will enable users to create their own avatar and explore a real-time virtual community, as if they are playing a detailed 3D game for PS3. The service will become available globally beginning in fall 2007. It allows PS3 users to interact, communicate, join online games, shop, share private content and even build and show off their own personal spaces to others in real time. Home will be available as a free download from the PlayStation Store and will launch directly from XMB (XrossMediaBar) on PS3. Nintendo’s Wii outsells Xbox 360 and PS3 in January

“According to the new market data provided by market research firm NPD, US gamers mostly fetched Nintendo Wii video games console, which helped it easily soar past Xbox 360 in sales and open a huge lead over the PS3. The second best-selling console was Sony’s 7-year-old PlayStation 2, which moved 299,000 units and outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360 with merely 5000 units and Sony’s newer but more expensive PS3 with nearly 300,000 units. According to NPD Group’s research data, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 294,000 units, while Sony’s Playstation 3 sold 244,000 units. PS3 getting movie downloads

“It seems Sony is desperate to continue the trend it has set of doing everything the Xbox 360 can do only much later. The latest example: movie downloads. Sony’s PlayStation Studio Chief Phil Harrison spilled the beans in an interview with 1UP saying “The decision we made to put a hard drive in every PlayStation 3 was because we saw the long term benefit. The ten year plan of allowing people to download all kinds of digital content to their PlayStation 3 — not just games but movies, music, HD, standard definition TV, you name it. Playstation 2 surpasses Playstation 3 in weekly sales

Crysis confirmed for Xbox 360

“The big news is the PC game Crysis is coming to the 360. However, that PC game won’t be the same game as what we will see on the home console. Because Crysis will be running at DirectX10, the game would look inferior since the 360 can only do DirectX9 (as mentioned before). So, the developers are using the same universe that the PC game is set in, with some similar story elements, but the gameplay will be entirely different…” (Read full article here)

Sony PSP’s latest firmware cracked again

Resistance PS3 game uses 22 gigabytes of Blu-ray disc

“According to Ryan Schneider, spokesman for Insomniac Games, “Resistance: Fall of Man” Blu-ray PS3 game is making good use of the new format, using up a massive 22 gigabytes for music, level data, textures and code. These discs can only hold 25 gigabytes in total per layer. Pointing to the fact that HD-DVD cannot store this much information on a single layer disc, he kind of threw some sand in Microsoft and Toshiba’s eyes. EA thinks Nintendo’s Wii will run $170

“While many gamers are getting ready to decide whether they want to shell out as much as $600 for Sony’s PlayStation 3 this holiday season, one Electronic Arts executive thinks Nintendo’s own next-generation console offering, the Wii, will come in at a much more attractive price.
